I didn’t intend for this to be my email this week, but seeing as it’s 5:42 AM as I’m writing this, and I haven’t opened my computer for the ENTIRETY of Fall Break (which I’ll count as a win for me!), here we are.
*Stick around to the end to see a video of one of my FAVORITE ornaments I’ve made so far. Safe to say, I’m obsessed.*
If you’re wanting the “nose piercing story” — not to worry, I will share that soon! I just had to pivot this week.
My friend sent me this Substack post, which without even reading it I love.
To which my response was:
OMG. MY LIFE GOAL IS TO DRESS LIKE I WALKED OUT OF A NORA EPHRON OR NANCY MEYERS MOVIE.
Because that’s the truth.
I often think, “Would Kathleen Kelly wear this? Or Iris from The Holiday?” TBH I have a knock-off of Iris’s iconic dress from the opening scene of the movie, and I *might* still have it in my closet in *hopes* it will one day fit me again…
And it got me thinking…
Art is the same way (for me)…
Both Nancy and Nora have a way of creating an atmosphere that’s so WARM AND INVITING, the same way I want my own home to feel, and TBH it’s the way I feel when creating my artwork.
And since this week I went viral on Instagram (and apparently brought some trolls out of the woodwork along with that) — I think this reminder deserves to be shared a couple weeks in a row,
AND since I’m desperately trying to make that 6:30 AM post time — let’s see if I can make this happen:
5 Tips for Choosing Art You Love
Inspired by the vibes of Nancy Meyers and Nora Ephron movies:
1. Go for Timeless Charm (Think Something's Gotta Give)
• In a Nancy Meyers film, interiors are all about timeless, cozy elegance—soft colors, serene beach houses, and well-curated spaces. When choosing art, aim for pieces that give you that warm, timeless feeling, the kind that would still feel just as beautiful years from now. Look for pieces that blend classic styles with a touch of modern sophistication. If it feels like it could hang in Diane Keaton's perfect beach house, it's a keeper.
2. Follow Your Heart, Not Trends (Like You've Got Mail)
• In You've Got Mail, Kathleen Kelly's bookstore, "The Shop Around the Corner," is filled with quirky, personal touches that reflect her unique personality. When picking art, channel that spirit—forget what's "in" right now and choose pieces that speak to your heart. Just like Kathleen kept her cozy shop full of books that felt personal, pick art that brings you joy, even if it's not trendy.
3. Mix Romance with Real Life (Think When Harry Met Sally)
• Nora Ephron knew how to balance romance with the complexities of real life. In art, that means finding pieces that reflect both your dreams and the everyday beauty around you. Choose something whimsical and romantic—like a soft, dreamy landscape—but also include more grounded pieces, like a detailed cityscape. This combo reflects the harmony of idealism and reality, much like Sally's outlook on life and love.
4. Create a Cozy, Lived-In Feel (Like It's Complicated)
• In It's Complicated, Meryl Streep's home is warm, cozy, and so inviting it practically demands a glass of wine and a soft blanket. When choosing art, opt for pieces that make your space feel cozy and lived-in. Think textured prints, hand-painted details, or abstract pieces that evoke comfort. Art should make your home feel like a sanctuary—a space that, like Jane's kitchen, always smells of fresh pastries.
5. Tell a Story (Inspired by Julie & Julia)
• Nora Ephron's Julie & Julia is all about passion, storytelling, and chasing your dreams—whether it's cooking or blogging. When picking art, look for pieces that tell a story or represent your personal journey. Maybe it's a place you've visited or a subject that represents your passions. Like the way Julia Child's recipes tell a story through food, let your art collection say something meaningful about you.
The bottom line? Choosing art should be about surrounding yourself with pieces that feel like HOME, much like the beloved characters in these films create spaces and lives they adore.
Keep choosing art that’s right for YOU, and really, that advice can go for almost anything, and then truly nothing else matters. :)
