The first time I heard the term “ugly phase” in art, I felt seen.
Because let’s be honest—every painting goes through that stage. You know the one. The colors don’t quite blend right, the composition looks off, and you start questioning if you even know how to paint anymore. It’s messy. It’s uncomfortable. And worst of all, it makes you want to quit.
I had one of those moments this week, and while I’m tempted to say it started with me trying a new brand of makeup, it was actually with an art project.
I was working on a piece—one I knew had potential—but no matter how many times I stepped back and squinted at it, all I saw was chaos. The more I fussed with it, the worse it looked. My gut reaction? Scrap it. Toss it. Burn it. (Okay, maybe not burn it, but you get the idea.)
But instead of giving in, I walked away. I let it sit for a day. And when I came back? The problems weren’t as big as they seemed. A few thoughtful brushstrokes later, and the painting started coming together in ways I hadn’t expected.
That’s the thing about the ugly phase—it’s not the end. It’s the middle. And if you push through, you just might create something incredible.
Art Tip of the Week:
Feeling stuck in the ugly phase? Try this:
Step away: Sometimes, the best thing you can do is nothing. Give your brain (and eyes) a break before making changes.
Take a photo: Seeing your work on a screen can help you notice what’s actually wrong (vs. what your inner critic is screaming about).
Trust the process: Every artist—every single one—deals with this. The difference between a finished piece and a forgotten one is whether or not you keep going.
So if you’re in the ugly phase right now, keep pushing. Beauty is just on the other side.

Happy painting,
